Dean Crowston presents the new Arts plan at the Chan Centre in May 2025.

Strategic plans in higher education can be perceived as abstract and administrative, so the goal for the new University of British Columbia (UBC) Faculty of Arts Strategic Plan was to make it clear and relatable. With its mix of humanities, social sciences and creative and performing arts, UBC Arts is uniquely positioned in the higher education landscape and the design needed to reflect that. We had only three months and no budget beyond our team’s time to create the design, which forced us to be resourceful in our approach.

The final plan uses an editorial look and feel, leveraging a strong grid system, photography sourced from academic units, and custom spot illustrations. The final copy was rearranged to move supplementary information to the end, allowing the framework, goals and actions to come to the front. The plan has seen strong engagement since it launched in September 2025, especially with student audiences which is noteworthy for this kind of content.
