Arts Visual Identity System

“Respected” design applications demonstrating A’s, purples, patterns, and UBC brand elements in use.
Materials aimed at student audience leverage the “vibrant” tone, applying a broader colour palette, textures, and illustrations.
Examples of the Arts VIS applied arcoss channels at the departmental level.
An Internal Resource hub hosts templates, guidelines, and other brand resources to support communications staff.

The Arts Visual Identity System (VIS) was developed to improve alignment with the UBC brand and create visual communications consistency throughout the Faculty. We proposed the project to the Dean’s office, explaining how a refreshed identity would improve recognition, differentiate Arts from other faculties and institutions, foster pride and community, and create efficiencies amongst decentralized communications staff.

With Arts leadership on board, we interviewed Arts community members to set our visual direction. The Arts identity was built out around the values we gathered from staff, faculty and students: innovative, vibrant, respected, diverse, and inclusive.

We leveraged core elements of the UBC brand to set our foundation: typography, photography styles, and logos. Arts styles were developed around that, including a palette of accessible Arts purples, a custom illustration library to bring personality and a youthful feel to student-focused materials, and a new graphic “A” for the faculty that could be used as a pattern, texture, or standalone element.

The same design framework applies to departmental materials—swapping purple for a custom monochromatic palette, and leveraging imagery and copy to communicate departmental personality.
